New issue: REM70 February 2010

RAIL EXPRESS Modeller No. 70REM70: The best for modern modelling!
Inside RAIL EXPRESS magazine No. 165.
In the bumper February 2010 issue:

• Comment: It’s time to total up the releases from 2009 and make some judgements! Do you remember what models hit the shelves in the last 12 months… surprisingly there weren’t many. We look at the results before finally making our call for the top model of the year, and for the one we judged the worst.
• News: Bachmann releases the first images of its completely retooled Class 03 0-6-0DM shunter and its forthcoming ‘Autoballaster’ wagons, Hattons unveils its Class 14 ‘Teddy Bear’ Type 1 trip locomotive and Replica’s ‘rub-down’ transfer range is extended. There is also an update of our DB Schenker limited edition Class 37/5.
• Reviews: The release of a new ‘standard’ British Railways wagon from the 1950-60s is always a treat. With this key period for freight stock ignored by most other manufacturers, except, of course, when it comes to locomotives, Bachmann has followed up its excellent range of BR 12-ton vans with another Modernisation Plan classic, the ‘Presflo’ cement hopper.

RAIL EXPRESS Modeller No. 70

• D&E Files: With the release of the Bachmann ‘Presflo’ hopper imminent, we take a look at the prototype vehicles, with numerous photographs and a 4mm scale drawing. Geographically widespread and long-lived they are the perfect wagon for 1960-80s modellers.
• Research: Confused by the multitude of TOPS codes, identification types and vehicle numbering applied to first generation diesel multiple units, especially in the pre-1980s era? You are not alone! The Mostyn boys present a DMU primer, before going on to explain how the team chose the Class 104 sets that they modelled.
• Modelling: The Mostyn team explain the philosophy behind the decision to ‘go it alone’ with the BRCW Class 104s and design a range of detail parts based around the donor Hornby ‘Calder Valley’ unit, before moving onto a thorough explanation of the DMU rebuild project itself.

Interesting editorial do you think we may see a surprise release from hornby this year maybe at the DEMU exhibition again or was anything hinted at the press launch of the new range or is it all just speculation?

  8. Mike says:

Hi, regarding the mention of the Bachmann 2010 range, I was wondering whether Bachmann have ever given a reply to Rail Express regarding the snowploughs on their locos. I’ve seen adverse comments in reviews about the snowploughs and I have to agree. Bachmann have produced some very high quality models of late (the Rail Express sponsored 37s were top notch and despite the reservations of the Rail Express review I think the latest class 47 is a good model) but I feel that the bogie mounted snowploughs are a feature that is in long need of an update…

    • Gareth says:

As you know we agree strongly with you on the point of Bachmann’s Class 37 snowploughs (and the other bufferbeam detailing components), however we are struggling to get Bachmann to upgrade these items. Please help us and contact Bachmann direct if you think they are rubbish!

Further to my question about the DVT’s I see my credit card has been charged for the EWS management train so can I guess they are here?
    thanks

  10. Alex Fenton says:

hey railexpress, i was chuffed to bits when my dvt came through the post yesterday, i guess hornby forgot to put the other two on the realease list for febuary

  11. Gareth says:

All three liveries will be here very soon. Hornby is sending them to us first as they progress through customs. I believe the other two colour schemes will be with us very shortly – they will be despatched immediately after they arrive in our office.

    Hi
I realise you are due to announce the next limited edition class 37’s, just a plea from someone who is poor, will there be some single models and not just twin packs, I think if I bought another twin pack the wife will kill me!!
    thanks

    • Gareth says:

      Hi Mark,

I do have some sympathy with your comments, however, Bachmann demands a certain order quantity in order to get tooling changes made. ‘Twin-packs’ might be considered expensive (although we price them under the cost of two individual locomotives), but RAIL EXPRESS has a significant financial investment tied up in the models and this format might be the only way to ensure that these quantities are met.

There will be more individual models produced in the future, like 37507, but unfortunately not in the next run.

  13. Neil Robinson says:

Received my Virgin DVT on Saturday, after a hard days slog at a Uni-tutorial. Straight on the layout with virgin liveried 47 and associated stock and then with an 86 as well in virgin livery!

One word summed it up ‘Stunning’.

Thanks RE Team – Top marks again.

  14. mark jackson says:

    Hi gareth
thanks for the clarification on twin packs, as you say they are only expensive because of the big outlay at once but on a loco by loco basis they are OK. I will see what is coming then see where funds are. Would you take part payments over a few months prior to models arrival for example?
    cheers
