Seven Class 24s and Class 25s are on the menu for 2008.
JUST ARRIVED IN the RAIL EXPRESS Modeller office is the first of what plans to be an extensive selection of new BR/Sulzer Types 2s from Bachmann, which will feature a range of specifications (DCC ready, DCC sound etc). All will sport modified tooling to accept full lighting.
Pictured here is Beyer-Peacock-built Class 25/3 No. D7646 in two-tone green with half-yellow ends (Cat Ref. 32-405, RRP £56.55), which is listed for an August-September release.
When the Class 25 was first released way back in mid-2001 it introduced a new standard of running quality for Bo-Bo locos to the British market. However, it came in for some criticism for its inaccurate front end which failed to capture the distinctive character of the infamous ‘Rats’.
This was later slightly tweaked by Bachmann, but the version released here, which has been upgraded with marker lights and an illuminated headcode panel, does not appear to have seen any further cosmetic attention. Also disappointing is the bufferbeam pipework – it would have been nice, for example, for the Barwell-based firm to have modified this area to include the ‘scale’ screw couplings as fitted to the Class 57 and 66 from new.
The new lighting is effective, but the headcode panel is illuminated bright white, whereas a warm yellow would have been more appropriate. Other than that, the paint finish is excellent with accurate colours and good separation between the two green bands.
The other six locomotives are as follows:
30-050 Class 25 DCC Passenger Set w/ loco lights – RRP £129.95
32-327 Class 25/1 25052 BR blue [weathered] – RRP £58.75
